Protect Equality

Elections are drawing closer and everyone is starting to get all hot and bothered.  I'm not even living on US soil right now and I can feel the tension.  There are so many important things on the ballots.  In California, the battle over proposition 8 is raging.  Both sides are pulling out all the stops to try and grab as many voters as they can before polls close.  It should already be obvious which side I am on, I haven't exactly been quiet about it.  You know this is the first time in my life that I have ever really gotten involved in politics.  I made my first ever political donation to the No on 8 campaign.  In fact I made two.  I have also been actively contacting my peers to inform them of the issues and I hope that they too will join me in voting NO on prop 8.  And I have also been utilizing my personal talents in graphic design to help spread the word.  You may have seen my first attempt at political advertising with my rework of the opposition's logo.  It has been getting lots of attention on my flickr, which is really exciting.  I have been loving the comments from both sides.  Yet it pains me when some people decide to get hostile or mean.  Today I had to delete one of the comments for saying hateful things.  That wasn't fun, but at the same time I'm glad I haven't had to do it more often.

Today I made two new original designs for No on 8.  They aren't official or anything, but I still wanted to make them 1) because it's fun, & 2) because I think the message they communicate is important.  I'm currently taking an advertising class and my professor encouraged me to explore the idea of "Protect Equality".  These are my first attempts (of what could or could not be more) to express this idea in a typographical manner. (I love typography.)  I would love to hear any and all feedback :)

protect equality

equality is for everyone

Take care everyone, and please go out and vote.
NO on 8. or yes on 8.

P.S. If you happen to live in CA and are so inclined, please vote NO on prop 8, like Apple.  I would really appreciate it :)

California: Vote NO on Prop 8

New commercials from the Yes on 8 camp are the worst yet.  Using photos of children without permission and twisting the truth, they are pulling out all the stops to trick californians into supporting segregation and discrimination of their very own neighbors, friends, and coworkers.

The #1 supporter of Yes on 8 is the mormon church providing 80% of all donations.  That is NOT a majority voice.  That is a small percentage of americans trying to dictate what the majority can and cannot do.  If you think you are unaffected by Prop 8, think again.  Your neighbors, friends, and coworkers of the LGBT community are counting on YOU to help them protect their rights.  The mormon church is a juggernaut using it's mandatory tithes received from members to spread hate and inequality.  Some members have petitioned to their elders to STOP spending their money, that is donated in the name of God, to spread hate.

Please donate to NO on 8 and help spread the truth about love and freedom.

Jetsetting, Be Back Soon

Hey! Well I'd love to write a new post for y'all but I'm too busy jetsetting this weekend.  I'll be in Guanajuato at the Cervantino festival getting all cultured and stuff.  In the meantime I would like to leave you with a new song and a couple interesting news articles for you to peruse.  Enjoy :)

Music for a JetSet weekend #137: R.I.P. Edition

About to WalkStop EPStars And The SeaCivilianHey Hey My My Yo Yo
Throw Me the Statue Delorentos Boy Kill Boy Junior Senior

The JetSet List:
Junior Senior R.I.P.:
1. Itch U Can't Skratch
2. No No No's
3. Take My Time
4. Can I Get Get Get
5. Move Your Feet
Boy Kill Boy R.I.P.:
6. Civil Sin
7. On And On
8. Six Minutes
9. Suzie
10. Promises
11. Be Somebody
12. Stop - Delorentos (still alive)
13. About To Walk - Throw Me The Statue (still alive)

I recently found out that two musical groups which I love and listen to regularly have recently decided to call it quits.  The Danish duo Junior Senior and the English rock group Boy Kill Boy have both issued statements on their respective MySpace pages definitively saying goodbye to all their fans.

Jesper Jr. and Jeppe Sr. from Junior Senior stated:
"We have decided in much peace and prosperity to put Junior Senior to rest and focus 100% on making music on our own, as we have been doing for the last year, Jesper Jr. through I Scream Ice Cream -- and now The Little Sisters -- and Jeppe Sr. as Jeppe."
They say that they are still good friends and that there is no animosity between them.  They are both excited to be pursuing their solo careers.  The full statement can be read on their myspace page in the blog section.

As for Boy Kill Boy, their story is a little less happy and a little more bitter.  In a myspace bulletin entitled B.K.B.R.I.P. the lead man stated:
"Every time i try to [write this out] i don't like how it sounds so i stop, go to the pub and pretend it's not actually happening. So i just thought today i'd finally just get it out there.
"Basically like many other bands we kinda got sucked into some sort of decision made by 'the powers that be' that guitar bands are 'over'. The label got shakey and decided to start chasing whatever they're told is gonna be the next big thing and as a result, we got dropped, just a month after the [second] record was released."
So it seems in the case of BKB, everything is not sunishine and rainbows.  The group seems really broken up about it and is finding it hard to accept the idea that it's all over.  The full statement can be read here.
I wish all the members of BKB the best of luck.  I will miss them.  And as for Jesper and Jeppe of Junior Senior, I am really excited to be hearing both of their solo debuts.  Although I will always remember what was, and never will be again, Junior Senior.

This week's JetSet List is in honor of these two groups and includes a sampling of their best songs.  I also included two bonus rock tracks from
Throw Me the Statue and Delorentos.  I found them both on a mix from 2008's SXSW music festival.  The download link for everything is just below the setlist.  And of course, if you enjoy the music please support these bands...although that might be harder now considering they don't exist anymore :(

Meet Joe the Plumber: my kind of guy

I am with you 100% Joe.  This THIS is why I am a republican.  Why penalize SUCCESS?  Why do we punish those who are fulfilling the AMERICAN DREAM?
America was NOT, EVER founded on socialist ideals.  I respect one person being a Republican and the other being a Democrat, but let's start calling Obama what he really is, a Socialist.

Believe Because It Is Absurd

E Clampus Vitus

“It’s a common saying that no one has been able to tell if they are historians that like to drink or drinkers who like history.  And no one knows because no one has been in any condition to record the minutes.”

Connecticut Supreme Court Legalizes Same-sex Marriage

Gay Marriage in Connecticut
"Interpreting our state constitutional provisions in accordance with firmly established equal protection principles leads inevitably to the conclusion that gay persons are entitled to marry the otherwise qualified same sex partner of their choice."
“Although marriage and civil unions do embody the same legal rights under our law, they are by no means equal.  The former is an institution of transcendent historical, cultural and social significance, whereas the latter is not.”
JUSTICE RICHARD N. PALMER, joined by Justices Flemming L. Norcott Jr., Joette Katz and Lubbie Harper of the Connecticut Supreme Court, writing for the majority in a 5-4 ruling.

Soon to be married Janet Peck says:
“I so look forward to the day when I can take this woman’s hand, look deeply into her eyes and pledge my deep love and support and commitment to her in marriage."

The other day yours truly, JetSet J, was featured on Pitter Patter (a great blog written by one of his friends).

And yes it is a direct quote, and no I am not afraid of Kanye West.  Go check it out.

UPDATE: So, I just took the time to actually read Kanye's blog and am still standing by what I said.  I don't see this blog helping him gain fans in any way...unless those fans happen to be under the age of 14, or retarded of a low maturity level.
