NYPD night-sticking student protesters - Kimmel Occupation Day 3

jetset-j-dot-snowflakes (by degreeszero)

The action starts at around the 2 minute mark.  A police officer can be seen using violent force against student protesters, while a girl begs for him to stop.  I was there when it happened and it was so powerful to hear the whole crowd start chanting "SHAME! SHAME! SHAME!" after the cops got violent.

NYU issues a statement to students

jetset-j-dot-snowflakes (by degreeszero)

Dear NYU & Lynne Brown Senior VP,

"Legitimate forms of protest" is an oxymoron.  Activism is not something that can be detailed in corporate policy.

Protest cannot be constrained by the rules and regulations of the very institution that is being protested against.

Read NYU & Lynne Brown's entire statement here.

--> PS: "None of the students' demands was [sic] met."  This thing is SO not over.

"Hey J, why TBNYU?"

jetset-j-dot-snowflakes (by degreeszero)

Some of my friends may be wondering right now why I suddenly am supporting the events that have been going on at the Kimmel center.  Many of you probably remember that just 24 hours ago I too was bashing the protest and belittling their cause.  However I was just as captivated as all by what was going on, glued to NYU Local's liveblog.  As students we read and hear about the student activism of 1968 and think to ourselves, "Thank God it's not like that today".  The fact is that it isn't like that today BECAUSE of the efforts of students all around the world.  We benefit from their actions, much like young gay and lesbian men and women today benefit from the stonewall riots and activism of the 60's and 70's, or black-americans benefit from the work of MLK Jr. and the civil rights movement.

We take what we have for granted, it's true.  But the real danger is letting ourselves be fooled that there isn't anything left to fight about.  The events of the last two days are proof that there is plenty to fight for, that our work is not done.  For me the Kimmel occupation represents so much more than TBNYU! and their demands.  It is a call to students and youth everywhere around the world to wake up and demand respect from their educators.  We must realize that we cannot put the responsibility of the formation of the next great generation into the hands of others.  We must take responsibility for ourselves, form our own opinions, and take hold of our future.  That is what this is about.  It is about moving beyond apathy to the level of courage.  We must all have the courage to demand that which is unquestionably ours!

We must have the courage to take back our lives and our futures!

TBNYU! - Day 3: shit gets real

jetset-j-dot-snowflakes (by degreeszero)

If y'all are interested in following what is happening with TBNYU! and the Kimmel Occupation check out the twitter feed.  All other liveblogs are non-existant since NYU denied access to The Press and shut down internet and electrical outlet power in Kimmel.  Twitter is the best place to find up-to-date info on what is going on.  Check out the tweets from the last hour.

Share photos on twitter with Twitpic

TBNYU! is calling all supporters to 60 Washington Sq S.  Above is the most recent photo of what is happening outside the Kimmel center on W 4th st.  My roommates are heading down now and will be sending updates my way.  If this thing stays alive I'll be heading down in a bit to liveblog the event from outside.  If that happens (and I hope it does) then make sure to keep an eye on my twitter feed in the sidebar -->

UPDATE: NYU Local has a transcript of the official press release just recently put out by NYU Spokesman John Beckman.

"Into His Arms" by Daniel Darwin

Into His Arms

I was facebook cruising the other day and came across this painting a friend of mine did.  I absolutely have fallen in love with it, and in true me fashion decided to pirate his photo and post it up here without asking permission.  I hope you don't mind Daniel.  It truly is a wonderful work, and I would die to see the original painted canvas ;)

Jetset J is on his way out

jetset-j-dot-snowflakes (by degreeszero)

The month of February is half over and with it hopefully the last vestiges of winter.  At least one can hope.

Winter will not be the only thing leaving with the month of love, so will Jetset J.  Now that I've finally crashed back down in the good ole' USA after two years of traveling, my jetset lifestyle is no more.  Don't be sad, I know I'm not.  It's nice to have some stability for once.  Plus I've come to finally realize how much I love America, my home in Cali, and my new home in New York City.  And so to mark the end of this era of my life my little website will be getting a whole new name & look (the address will stay the same blog.jjubela.com).

Come March 1st things will look a little bit different 'round here.  Don't be frightened, change is good, embrace it.

besos-

J

Why Margaret Cho doesn't like threesomes

I think she makes a very valid point.  Yet I have no first-hand experience.  Would anyone else like to weigh in? Agree/disagree?

PS. I love Chelsea Lately :)

Famous Faces & New York Places: Lili Taylor

jetset-j-dot-snowflakes

14LiliTaylor2Spotted just before lunchtime today, Lili Taylor in the Dean & Deluca on  Universtiy Ave, NYC.  Yours truly...me...has adopted this D&D as his preferred morning coffee joint due to its reasonable coffee prices and the fact that it has yet to piss me off.  Sorry Oren's, you guys have messed up my order and just all-around irritated me one too many times.  Plus you raised your prices, that's a big no-no in my book.

I digress.  I spotted Ms. Taylor coming in as I was leaving after a short study sesh.  I'm convinced no one else in the joint had a clue who she was, and likely anyone else reading this must be wondering themselves, it might be useful to head over to IMDB and check her out.  Frankly, I only recognized her face and knew she was in the movie Mystic Pizza.  I had to google her to figure out her name.  Alas, this is all too often my problem, that's why I never approach these actors I run across, I have no idea who they are!  Anyways Ms. Taylor, you were looking good, if not lacking a bit of make-up, yet I hope that life is treating you well.  At least you looked better than my last sighting, Paul Giamatti because he just looked rank.

Veinte-Cinco (copied from fbook)

half my face

1. Honestly, my ultimate goal in life is to reach enlightenment. No joke.

2. I tend to be a very open person and find it difficult to lie to people. However I value privacy and anonymity very highly. I think it's because I plan on being very successful in life and don't want to suddenly one day find myself surrounded by fakes and leeches.

3. Life should be lived passionately.

4. When asked about my greatest regret or most embarrassing moment I never know what to say. This is because I have no idea what those moments would be. Yet if you ask me about my happiest moment or greatest love, I find it much easier to answer.

5. I don't like to hold on to the negative.

6. I believe in 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th...an infinite number of chances.

7. People can only change themselves. "Be the change you want to see in the world."

8. The world is not black & white. But I love black & white photography.

9. I wish I wrote lyrics and music.

10. I used to write poetry, stories, and draw in elementary school. I don't really write anymore. I'm trying to change that.

11. I don't think I want to be a professional graphic designer like I planned. I want to be a model, have a pop career, and travel around the world with all of my friends.

12. Studying abroad and learning a second language are the best decisions I ever made.

13. I refuse to believe the world was better a hundred years ago as compared to today. We are on a path of constant growth. The world is a more open and loving place today than it ever has been.

14. I don't trust Barack Obama.

15. Sometimes, in my weakest moments, I hate being gay and just wish I could be "normal". Yet, deep down inside I know that there is no such thing as normal, and that I am exactly who I am supposed to be.

16. I get really good grades in school and don't know why. I try not to question it.

17. I hate writing, yet a lot of people seem to think I'm pretty good at it.

18. I wish I had more passion in my life.

19. I have no fucking clue what I am doing most of the time.

20. I have a priveleged life, and am extremely thankful for it.

21. I accomplish everything that I put my mind too.

22. I want to be talked about, but avoid drama like the plague.

23. I believe that respect and communication are the two most important things for any relationship, of any kind, to work.

24. I believe that it's important to be honest with yourself about what it is that you REALLY, TRULY want out of life, and then do everything in your power to go for it.

25. I wrote this list more for myself than for any other person. After writing it I went through taking things out I don't actually want the world to know, and then laughed for how lame most of this list will sound to people who read it.
